 Inspiring Accounting Students- Delaware CPA.

Wilmington, DE – June 9, 2016 — Belfint, Lyons & Shuman, CPAs (BLS) and William Penn High School have partnered to give students an opportunity to experience the public accounting industry through a half-day immersion program at BLS. The program was designed to build awareness of the public accounting industry for younger generations, give students an experience that would better prepare them for their future, and help raise the bar of students’ expectations of themselves and their success. Opportunities for successful public accountants are endless and BLS strives to encourage high school students today to consider public accounting as a meaningful career.

Students from the Penn Accounting Team arrived at BLS for a half-day immersion program that started with an office tour and a service offering overview from members of our Accounting & Auditing, Tax & Small Business and Corporate & International Services departments. The students then rotated in each department for shadowing sessions, followed by lunch with
additional BLS team members where the students could ask questions and learn about each individual’s path to becoming a CPA. The experience continued a few days later with BLS Team Members traveling to William Penn High School to attend the year-end financial presentation the Penn Accounting Team gave to the leadership of Penn Bistro, where WPHS Culinary students prepare for college and careers in a new, state-of-the-art, restaurant-style, educational kitchen.

Barry A. Crozier, CPA, CGMA of BLS CPAs is a member of the William Penn Graduation Advisory Committee and the University of Delaware Department of Accounting & MIS Advisory Committee. In these committees, topics such as exposing high school students to public accounting and diversity within the industry are prevalent. BLS has a history of giving back to the community they serve and to the accounting industry. It was a natural fit for us to get involved with the Penn Accounting Team.

Barry A. Crozier, CPA, CGMA, Director/Shareholder states, “I am extremely encouraged by the programs being offered at William Penn High School. The programs enable students to study accounting in preparation of college level course study and give the students opportunities for field trips like the BLS immersion program. The students that we met are sharp, attentive, and confident. The BLS Team was impressed by the Penn Accounting Team’s poise, interest and accounting knowledge. They were amazed to see that these students were presenting financial statements to a leadership team, similar to how we would present to our clients. I’m not sure how many high school students have that opportunity. Our team of accountants were very excited to be involved in this program and to continue with our mission.”
